About Us
We are a local non-profit dedicated to inclusion, dignity and the belief that every young woman deserves to feel confident and beautiful. Through a warm, one-on-one shopping experience, we provide low-cost or free prom dresses and accessories to high school students who might otherwise miss this milestone due to financial strain.
Prom is more than a dance, or a dress. It’s a night many young women dream of - a moment to belong, to celebrate and to shine. For many, the cost makes that dream feel out of reach. Fairy Godmothers of Rochester removes the financial barrier, ensuring that every girl has the opportunity to share the joy and magic of prom.
Our impact is made possible through the generosity of our volunteers, donors & community partners. Together, we create a place where every young woman feels valued, supported and empowered to embrace her worth.
History
The Fairy Godmothers of Rochester was founded in 2004 by Rene Spallina and Cynthia Jackson after being inspired by an Oprah segment featuring a prom dress program for financially challenged teens. When Cynthia later moved from the area, Mara Axelrod stepped in to support the organization.
By 2020, leadership transitioned to Ami Salzman and Lynne Fiero, who opened a storefront boutique at Marketplace Mall - an important step that expanded the program’s reach. In 2025, Ami became Director, established a formal executive committee, and welcomed new board members to ensure the organization not only thrives, but grows.
Over the last few years, we have deepened our presence in the community by visiting local schools, meeting students and introducing them to our services. Our goal is to build strong partnerships that foster mutual support, broaden access and position us as a trusted, dependable resource for every young woman who dreams of attending prom.
